Talking to your GP or pharmacist, is the first step. They’ll help you look at your lifestyle and suggest changes that are suitable for your condition and any treatment you’re having. Your pharmacist can also let you know about local services that can help you.
For example, if you want to start exercising but you're unsure how to, your GP can put you on the exercise on referral scheme. These schemes are run with local gyms and fitness centres and can include swimming. Ask at your GP practice for more information.
Your Pharmacist can also help you if you want to stop smoking, for instance by enrolling you in a clinic where you’ll get support from other people who are also trying to stop. Nicotine replacement therapy and other stop smoking treatments provided by your pharmacist can also help you resist cravings and boost your chances of quitting successfully.

Hypertension, also known as high or raised blood pressure, is a condition in which the blood vessels have persistently raised pressure.
High blood pressure is not typically something you can feel. However, if you have high blood pressure you are more likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a stroke.
According to the British Heart Foundation, as many as 7 million people in the UK are living with undiagnosed high blood pressure, without knowing they are at risk.
The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have it measured. You can have your blood pressure measured at a BP+ session in Walton Pharmacy, call now to book an appointment.
There isn't always a cause for high blood pressure and it is possible that a number of factors influence your blood pressure. With that in mind, you should always consult a health professional if you have been identified as having high blood pressure.
It is also possible that high blood pressure is the result of an underlying medical condition.
However, the following are likely to increase blood pressure:
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an abnormality in the rhythm of the heart. It involves the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beating irregularly.
AF is the most common form of arrhythmia, affecting 4 out of every 100 people over the age of 65. An individual may not feel any symptoms, while some feel palpitations, shortness of breath or chest pain.
AF can increase the risk of stroke by five times if untreated. The irregular heart rhythm can cause the blood to pool and clot in the heart chambers. If the clot is carried to the small blood vessels in the brain and blocks the blood flow, it causes a stroke.
To have an AF pulse check, attend a free BP+ session at Walton Pharmacy.
